About Sarapiquí
Sarapiquí is in the county of Heredia, and is 692.94 km2. The most important districts are La Virgen, Horquetas y Puerto Viejo
In documents from 1640 the Sarapiquí River is mentioned as a flowing part of the San Juan River. The town started to develop about 30 years ago when the Government improved some of its agricultural programs and the "bananeras" (banana plantations) established their companies here.
The Votos Indians were the first people to live in this area. Then, in the colonial period, the land was colonized because of its importance as a river port to the North Zone and as access to the San Juan River. Recently, many people with a variety of socio-cultural background from many other regions of the country have moved here, making it a more multicultural town. You can find a Guanacastecan family preparing a delicious "chicheme", or another family from the North Zone with an exquisite "chicharrón" (fried pork meat), as well as the original rice and beans.
Sarapiquí is a land of coffee, corn, cocoa, cardamom, bananas, exportation plants, tropical flowers, dwarf palm, fruits, and cattle breeding.
There are various protected zones in the area such as Braulio Carrillo National Park, Biological Station La Selva, protected area Sarapiquí, and the new Neotropic Sarapiquí Center, with an archaeological museum and Biological garden. |
